FAQ's

What is Pastoral Counseling?

Pastoral counseling is a form of therapy that combines psychological support with spiritual guidance. It helps individuals navigate life’s challenges by integrating faith-based principles with mental health care.

What is the difference between a church pastor providing counseling and a certified Christian counselor with a master’s degree in pastoral counseling?

The key difference lies in their training, approach, and scope of practice. While a pastor offers valuable spiritual support, a Christian counselor with a master’s in pastoral counseling can address both mental health and faith-based concerns in a more structured and clinically informed way.

Pastor Providing Counseling:

  • Offers spiritual guidance based on biblical principles.

  • Typically provides short-term support for life challenges, faith struggles, marriage, and grief.

  • Focuses on prayer, scripture, and pastoral care rather than formal therapy techniques.

  • May refer individuals to a professional counselor for deeper mental health needs.

Certified Christian Counselor (Master’s in Pastoral Counseling):

  • Has advanced training in both theology and psychological counseling.

  • Uses evidence-based therapeutic techniques while integrating Christian faith.

  • Can provide long-term, structured counseling for issues like trauma, depression, anxiety, and relationship struggles.

  • Meets professional standards for counseling

If Tori has the education required for a licensed counselor, why isn't she licensed?

Tori chose not to pursue licensure through the state of Virginia due to the state's restrictions on incorporating religion into therapeutic practices. As someone deeply committed to integrating faith and counseling, Tori felt that these restrictions would limit her ability to offer a holistic approach that includes spiritual guidance alongside emotional and psychological support. By not seeking state licensure, she is able to provide counseling that fully aligns with her Christian values and offers clients the freedom to engage in a faith-centered therapeutic process.
